Vietnamese Braised Catfish (Ca Kho To) Recipe


  • 1.5 lb cat fish fillets
  • 1 tsp salt and pepper
  • 1.5 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1.5 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 5 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1-2 sprigs onion, chopped (garnish)
  • 2 Thai Chili Pepper, crushed


In a medium bowl, add salt and pepper along with fish. Mix together until combine.

In a pan, heat up 1 tbsp oil and sugar on medium high heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved and caramelized color.

Add fish into pan. Stir until lightly caramelized.

Add fish sauce, soy sauce, garlic. Lastly, add water. Close pot for 5-7 minutes.

Simmer on medium heat until sauce thicken.

Sprinkle chili pepper and onion to garnish. Optional.

Note: My bf is allergic to coconut, so I substitute 1 cup of coconut cream with water. You can also probably substitute with milk as well. Coconut probably makes it taste better.
